Elisabeth Ballermann

Elisabeth has an extensive background inside and outside HSAA. She has been president of Health Sciences since 1995, becoming the first president elected by the membership. Elisabeth joined HSAA in 1980 when she started her health care career as a physical therapist at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. In 1986, Elisabeth joined the HSAA staff as a labour relations officer and later became president of the HSAA Staff Association. In order to enhance her academic background in labour relations, Elisabeth graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta.

After five years of hard work, Elisabeth helped bring HSAA into the "House of Labour" in 2003. Her affiliation involvement includes vice president positions with NUPGE and the AFL and participation on finance and pensions committees. Elisabeth is the only union representative on the Pharmacy Sector Steering Committee coordinated by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. The committee is conducting an occupational study of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Elisabeth is also HSAA's representative on the boards for the Friends of Medicare and the Parkland Institute.

Elisabeth's extensive community service was recognized in 2005 with the awarding of the Alberta Centennial Medal.
