Gillian Steward is a Calgary author and journalist. She currently writes a regular column for the Toronto Star and teaches journalism at Mount Royal University in Calgary. She was the managing editor at The Calgary Herald from 1987 to 1990 and wrote a syndicated column for the Southam newspapers from 1990-1992. From 2001 to 2004 she was a visiting professor at the School of Journalism, University of Regina. In 2000 she co-authored with Kevin Taft Clear Answers: The Economics and Politics of For-Profit Medicine. Gillian is also working on a PhD in communication studies at the University of Calgary.

In September 2000 The Health Care Protection Act (formerly Bill 11) was proclaimed and established as law in Alberta. Since the Act permits private, for-profit surgical facilities to keep patients for more than a 12-hour stay, it is only a matter of time before for-profit hospitals are approved and operating in Alberta. The first ones are likely to appear in Calgary.
