Dawn Paley
Fluent in English, French and Spanish, Dawn Paley writes for magazines and newspapers across Canada, including the Vancouver Sun, The Globe and Mail, BC Business Magazine, the Georgia Straight, Briarpatch, and This Magazine. Paley’s area of expertise is in the extractive industries, her research clients have included MiningWatch Canada and Naomi Klein. She’s reported on Canadian outward foreign direct investment throughout much of Latin America, including a stint as assistant producer on the award winning feature documentary Under Rich Earth, shot in the Intag region of Ecuador.
Paley’s work in radio and television has been featured on Democracy Now! and she served as a contributing editor with The Dominion, Canada’s grassroots newsmagazine, for two years. This summer, Paley will complete a Master’s in Journalism at the University of British Columbia. Her thesis project proposes that journalists should study transnational theory as a prerequisite for responsible foreign correspondence, and examines the formation and evolution of the Honduran elite in relation to the 2009 coup d’etat as a case study. She’s devoted thousands of hours to building grassroots media infrastructure, most recently with the fine folks at the Vancouver Media Co-op.
