Alison Beale

Alison Beale holds a doctorate in Communication from McGill University. She taught at the Universite du Quebec a Montreal before joining the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University. She is Co-Director of the Center for Policy Studies in Culture and Communities, and has published on communication history, film studies, and cultural policy. She has a long-standing interest in feminist research within her field. Recent publications include, as guest editor, a special issue of Feminist Media Studies, 2007, on feminist approaches to cultural policy. A Feminist Analysis of Language in the Media This talk will introduce some of the research and activism taking place around the world that is concerned with the ways-including the use of language- that media represent issues from war to child-care and from health to cultural funding. Feminist research of the last forty years has accumulated a number of tools and approaches concerned with media framing and agenda setting as they affect politics and public policy. The talk will give examples of these applied to recent issues and events, andwill also address new media and the activism of women in the global South.
