Concurrent Event (Session: a)

Anti-Capitalist Organizing and a Whole Earth Economy

Sat, November 21, 2009 | 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
1-003, ETLC

Speakers: Nathan Rao, Peter Brown

Nathan Rao: France’s New Anti-Capitalist Party and Radical-Left Strategy

I will take a look at the process leading to the birth of France’s New Anti-Capitalist Party (NPA) in early 2009 and the broader context in which the party now works. I will also try to tease out some broader lessons for radical-Left strategy in the present period.

Peter Brown: Economics with Ecocide: Building a Whole Earth Economy

Peter Brown will argue that the present economic order represents a clear and present danger to life’s prospects on Earth.  He will show that this order cannot provide minimally satisfactory answers to five simple questions: 1.What is it for? 2. How it works? 3. How big should it be? 4. What is fair? 5. How should it be governed?  He advocates a re-envisioning of the human place on Earth and in the Universe and an economic order designed to secure the prosperity of life’s commonwealth.

Admission: Included in registration. If not registered, session tickets are $15 regular and $10 low income.
